How to Talk About Money With Clients Without the Awkwardness
5 min read·Updated June 2026
Your discomfort is the real problem
Clients can feel when you are nervous about your own price, and it makes them doubt it too. The fix is not a clever script; it is being settled enough in your number that you can say it plainly and stop talking.
Say the number, then go quiet
After you state the price, resist the urge to fill the silence by justifying or discounting. Say it once, clearly, and let them respond. The pause feels long to you and normal to them.
Handle pushback with a question
When a client says that is a lot, do not immediately drop the price. Ask what they expected, or what part feels high. Often it is a value gap you can close with a sentence, not a discount.
Practice on small numbers first
Confidence with money is a skill that builds. Use the free calculator to settle on a number you believe in before the call, so you walk in already sure of your worth.
