What to Say When a Customer Says "I Can Get It Cheaper"
4 min read·Updated June 2026
It is a test, and caving fails it
When someone says they can get it cheaper, they are testing whether your price is real. Drop it and you just proved it was not, and taught them to push harder on everything next. Hold it calmly and you prove it was the right number all along.
Do not trash the cheaper option, question it
Badmouthing the competition makes you look insecure. Instead, get curious: they might be cheaper, and that could be the right call for you. Can I ask what is included in their number? Half the time, comparing scope does the work for you, and they realize they were not comparing the same thing.
Then let them choose
If it really is identical and price is all that matters, let them go without flinching: honestly, if it is purely about the lowest price, they may be your better option. That calm willingness to walk is what makes people reconsider. Need is created by the chance of not having it.
